This year I’m leading a group of artists on a travel sketching tour to Kangaroo Island, one of South Australia’s best-kept secrets. I was there in October last year and I instantly fell in love with the place. My first impression was, “I need to bring other artists here”. There are quite a variety of scenes to enjoy at Kangaroo Island – beaches, wide open spaces, quaint old houses, wildlife, birdlife, and quirky little surprises. My favourite spot is American River. There is something special about the calm gentle water, the pelicans and swans cruising by, the old boats of all shapes and sizes. I could spend a week there alone. I also love Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, both of which are in Flinders Chase at the western end of the island. Remarkable Rocks are an artist’s delight – the colours, shapes, and sheer size are amazing!

This tour is going to be quite leisurely, giving you plenty of time to relax and do your own thing too. I’ll be demonstrating and teaching in the mornings for about half and hour and then you’ll be free to choose your own sketching opportunities or just enjoy the sights. The choice is yours.

Unfortunately Kangaroo Island suffered terribly with bushfires in December/January 2019/2020 and nearly two-thirds of the island burned down. It breaks my heart knowing that so much wildlife suffered terribly. Thankfully there are many wonderful men and women on the island who have joined forces to help the injured animals, and to get the island back on its feet. The best way we can help is to visit. We can support by staying in their motels, eating at their restaurants, buying local produce and so on, and this is another reason why I’ve chosen Kangaroo Island as my travel destination this year.
